Balanced beam adhesion/gait tester for scratch resistance and hardness. This instrument consists of a pivoting beam with a 45° needle holder, a weight post, and a support to support the total test load mounted at one end. At the other end of the beam is a counterweight. A cam is rotated to lower and raise the needle and a sample bed mounted on ball bearings is used to move the test panel against the fixed needle.
Characteristics:
- To differentiate the degree of adhesion of coatings to substrates.
- Provides relative ratings for a series of coated panels.
- Scratch adhesion test : The needle used for scratch adhesion is a 1.6 mm (0.0625 in) drill rod, bent into a 180° loop with an outer diameter of 6.5 mm (0.256 in) ), hardened, polished and chrome-plated. Supplied with the tester is a set of twelve slotted weights with storage rack. In the adhesion test, weights are applied in increments of 0.5 kg up to a maximum of 10 kg.
- Wear resistance test : By moving a free edge of the test film against the needle under a varying load expressed in grams, the wear resistance is determined as the minimum load in grams required to shear the film to the substrate. In the wear test (scratch resistance), weights can be applied in 10 gram increments up to a maximum of 12 kg.
- Exceeds the requirements of ASTM D2197 Standard Test Method for Scratch Bond Adhesion of Organic Coatings.
- Meets ASTM D5178 standard test method for deterioration resistance of organic coatings.
- Meets aircraft engine group 50TF61-S1 specifications.
- Meets Naval Laboratory Specification WS 12858, Part 4.5.5 Hardness.
