Model 820 Sand Drop Tester

The Dropped Sand Abrasion Tester - Model 820 is a popular device used to measure the abrasion resistance of paint, lacquers and other organic coatings. Abrasion results from abrasive particles falling through a guide tube and impacting the test sample, until the substrate becomes visible.

The Dropped Sand Abrasion Tester consists of an 8" diameter sand reservoir that includes a 60° tapered funnel. Standardized abrasive particles placed in the reservoir are released into a guide tube using an abrasive flow gate cock. The guide is a 36" soft gauge straight tube that contains the abrasive particles as they fall. The samples are fixed below the guide tube at a 45° angle in a receptacle that includes an opening at the bottom that allows the abrasive particles to be collected in a container. A sturdy base and support system keeps the device upright.
