A small weighted ball resting on a coated surface will bleed the surface even if only slightly. The harder the surface, the smaller the indentation. The lateral force applied to the weighted ball to make it move is proportional to the depth of penetration. Gardco force-sensing linear motion testing machines have sufficient sensitivity to detect very small differences in such depth penetration. To take full advantage of this sensitivity, this measurement should only be attempted with machines that interact and record results.
The speed of movement of the hardness pot is very important in this measurement due to the "elastic" nature of most coatings. Many surfaces will show a decrease in the force to move the boat as the speed of movement increases. Therefore, performing this measurement at different cycle rates is useful to understand this property.
The base plate of the hardness pot is 1/4" thick stainless steel and is formed to receive three 3/8" diameter steel balls. The balls are held firmly in place with a ball retaining plate. The positioning of the balls is such that each one supports the same load as the whole. The weight of the set as shown in the diagram is one pound. The weight can be increased to two pounds by using the auxiliary weight shown with the friction canister.
