- The friction box is the same as the sponge box, except for precisely spaced holes to receive the friction sled bolts. The friction box can be used as a sponge box, but the sponge box cannot be used as a friction box. The design of the friction sled allows it to be secured in the friction box with either of its two machined sides exposed to the test surface. One side is machined with two wide guides that provide a test surface load of 0.50 pounds per square inch. The other side is machined with two narrow guides that increase the load against the test surface to 5.00 pounds per square inch.
The weight of the friction box is 1.0 lb. The combined weight of the friction box and friction sled is 4.8 pounds.
The friction sled is made of stainless steel with the skid ends rounded for easy driving on the testing surface. Most materials can be manufactured to fit and secure in the friction box and be used against a test surface. The stainless steel sled is just one example.
