Direct measurement of total coating thickness and the thickness of individual paint layers is a unique capability of the Tooke Gage. It features a dual measurement scope, with 1 mil per control mark space above the line and 20 microns below the line scale. Therefore, in addition to routine use, it often serves as a "referee" instrument for calibrating indirect or non-destructive thickness measuring instruments. Other uses include evaluation of substrate conditions and coating adhesion, and direct observation of microscopic cracks, brittle tendencies, blistering, cratering, or other microscopic film symptoms.
