The most widely used instrument to evaluate the scratch adhesion and scratch resistance of coatings is the Balanced Beam Tester. Newly designed by Gardco for a more useful laboratory instrument, this instrument meets and exceeds the requirements of ASTM D 2197. An exact contour probe, both loop and needle, developed for the SAM Tester is now used in the SAM Tester. balanced beam. The advantages are greater sensitivity in the lower load range of the stylus and portability with ease of use in any position and under most conditions. (Note: The load on the stylus is limited to 2,500 grams.) The load on the laboratory instrument model can be increased to 10,500 grams. The basics of the original Hoffman instrument have now been designed into a much more useful instrument. The original cylindrical cutter has been retained, but the complicated beam/weight/carriage arrangement has been replaced by a self-contained instrument the size of a shirt pocket. The new design is truly portable and can be used in any position. It measures just 5 inches long, 2 inches tall, and, excluding the control dial and locking nut, is less than 0.67 inches thick. The body of the instrument is manufactured from solid nylon to avoid damaging the surface of the test material and results in a weight of less than 5.5 ounces.
Three types of adapters are available for use with the Scratch Adhesion Tester Universal Load Handle: Gardco/Hoffman Cutter, Cross Cut Adhesion Cutter Adapter, and Balanced Beam Pointer Adapter can be used with the handle. universal charging .
